JHONSON & JHONSON Disposable Synthetic Absorbable Sutures
Vicryl (polyglactin 910) is an absorbable, synthetic suture produced by Ethicon Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. It is commonly available in a braided form and is used for soft tissue approximation and ligation, maintaining its tensile strength for about two to three weeks before being fully absorbed by the body in 56 to 70 days. A monofilament version is also available for ophthalmic use.
Vicryl sutures can be modified for different clinical needs. Variants like "Vicryl Rapide" are designed to break down faster in rapidly healing tissues such as mucous membranes, while "Vicryl Plus Antibacterial" contains triclosan to provide antimicrobial protection. However, due to its slow absorption and braided structure, Vicryl is not recommended for closing wounds exposed to air, as it can draw moisture and contaminants into the wound, potentially leading to poor healing and infection.
